Staying Positive in Negative Times

We’re all facing historic hardships during the ongoing pandemic. It’s easy to get lost in the negatives – isolating ourselves from friends and family, missing out on experiences like concerts and graduation, and having to figure out how to work and learn from home. I’ve been trying to focus on the positives of this unique experience, which is what I want to share with you. I don’t mean to take away from the gravity of the situation; rather, I want to encourage you to take a moment to appreciate what you can during this time.

Praise the Lord, this pandemic struck the United States at the turn of winter to spring. I am so fortunate to have been able to come back to the farm to ride out the “lockdown.” When I need a break from writing, I can go outside and find something to do. This week I’ve been working two new show heifers and taking care of a duckling and chicks I acquired last week. We’re also finishing up calving, and it’s been awesome to be home for calving for the first time in six years! I’d almost forgotten the adrenaline rush that comes from tagging a new calf and racing away when Mama comes barreling toward you 😉

Right now is a good time to pick up a hobby or new habit. I’ve been working on my photography skills and completing small projects around the farm. I also got involved in a Bible study and am working on my faith with a fantastic group of girls. Is there a book you’ve been wanting to read? TV show you want to catch up on? A skill you want to learn or perfect? Now you have a little extra time each day to do those things!

We also have the opportunity to do some spring cleaning and home projects with this newfound spare time. Before I left Manhattan, I did a LOT of cleaning and organizing in my house. Since I’m preparing to move following the completion of my master’s program, I took advantage of this unexpected free time to begin thinning out my belongings and packing up things I don’t currently need.

It’s OK to be sad and grieve those experiences you are missing out on. Let yourself feel those emotions, but don’t dwell on them. We can’t change this experience and it’s a unique time in history – do what you can to make the best of it. Reach out to an old friend, keep a gratitude journal, listen to new music, pick up a simple exercise routine.

This time of isolation is forcing us to slow down and notice the little things in our lives. We’ve taken a lot of things for granted and are now realizing what truly is – and isn’t – important. God is telling us to sit back and trust in Him. In this uncertain time when it feels like we have no control over our lives, God is reminding us that He is in control. Hold tight to Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” I hope you are able to make the best of this situation we’ve found ourselves in. Keep the faith friends, brighter days are ahead!
